"For more than three years, film work displaced any chance of doing a play. So, in between 17 movies, I exercised my theatre legs with a new solo show with the punning title 'A Knight Out.' This was devised in response to an invitation from the arts festival which celebrated the 4th Gay Games held in New York. The format was simple — confiding reminiscence of my parallel lives as an actor and as a gay man, illustrated with the words of poets, novelists and playwrights.
"I opened cold on Broadway and didn't invite the critics! After multiple tours in UK and elsewhere, the show may still have a further life."
— Ian McKellen, October 1999
