Richard
Cottrell. who is the Artistic Director of the new Cambridge Theatre Company, has
been Prospect's Associate Director since 1966. He trained as an actor in Paris
and from 1964 to 1966 was General Manager of the Hampstead Theatre Club where he
directed his first production. Feydeau's The Birdwatcher, with Michael
Bates and Prunella Scales. His work for Prospect has included works by Anouilh,
Pinter. Feydeau, Farquhar's The Constant Couple, with Robert Hardy and
Timothy West, which transferred to the New Theatre, and his own translation of
The Cherry Orchard with Lila Kedrova and Patrick Wymark which transferred
to the Queen's Theatre from the 1967 Edinburgh and Cambridge Festivals. He has
translated Feydeau for the company and, with Lance Sieveking, adapted E. M.
Forster's Howards End and A Room With A View. With Edward Bond he
translated The Three Sisters for the Royal Court. He is currently
rehearsing Jonson's The Alchemist and David Turner's Semi-Detached,
and in July is to direct his own translation of The Seagull with Lila
Kedrova as Madame Arkadina. Richard II, first produced in October 1968,
was his first Shakespearian production.
